If you are at all interested in cleanliness or comfort, this is not the place. If you are on an extreme budget, this place is definitely 1 of the cheapest in Rio.The location is also excellent& the staff are helpful.I hear they do a lot of events but I didn't get to experience them, but I liked that they didn't take commission on tours, making some things much cheaper. In the end I had a good experience there, but I think it depends a lot on the people in the hostel at the time. It's famed for being a party hostel,so if that's not your thing, perhaps another place is best.

I wasn't able to make it that night because my flight was cancelled and I tried to contact the hostel by email and phone to reschedule, I received no reply and I don't know what to do. Now I'm stranded without a place to stay. This is a horrible experience.

Staying here has been about the most fun I've had since college. I'm 29 and never stayed in a hostel before. Of course it's not as comfortable as a hotel, but it's not bad. If you want to meet and go out with travelers from all over the world, stay here. Everyone hanging out together made the hostel.

Directions
Piratas de Ipanema Guesthouse
From the airport: Take the REAL bus (cost R$6.50). After about 1 hour, it will go down all of Copacabana Beach and swing onto our street, Rua Joaquim Nabuco, heading toward Ipanema. We are half-way down the block closest to Ipanema Beach (its the 4th block). Green & White house, Blue gate, number 165 on the left... you cannot miss it.
From the bus terminal: Again, any bus to Copacabana/ Ipanema will be fine. When crossing from Copa to Ipanema the bus will either take our street, Rua Joaquim Nabuco, or it will take the next street over, Rainha Elisabeth. Either way, stop a half-block from the beach and its a short walk.
If you get lost or delayed, just call 55-21-2227-6580!
