It is no surprise that Amsterdam, Netherlands tops the list as the second most-friendly place in Europe with it’s claim-to-fame Red Light District, cannabis cafes, and overall liberal attitude and blunt (no pun intended!) mind-set – everything is possible in Amsterdam. Whether you come for a bite of one of their “special” brownies, for the sex shops or live sex shows, or for the raving party scene, you don’t have to be stoned to find some interesting sights to giggle about along these cobbled streets. Moreover we’ve taken the liberty to find you some hostels that truly capture the spirit of this one-of-a-kind city that lets it all hang loose.
And hey, whatever you decide to do here is your own prerogative. Just make sure you give us a hit back and leave some high reviews on Gomio.com after you’ve thoroughly enjoyed your stay.
The Bulldog Hostel – Legalized since 1996
Situated in the Red Light District and a mere 8 minute walk from Central Station, if Mary Jane were a person, she would have stopped by The Bulldog Hotel, in the very heart of Amsterdam. However, you can find the true “Mary Jane” here anyhow leaving smoke trails in the bar downstairs or available for purchase at the in-house coffee shop.
The roof terrace is the perfect place to watch the interesting mix of characters ramble below, as well as to get a view of Amsterdam’s winding streets and canals. You can also play pool or zone out gawking at the unusual fish in the hostel aquaria. Have the munchies? The Bulldog Hotel has got you covered. A breakfast with tea, coffee, juices, yogurt, cereals, buns, ham, and cheese is included.
The Flying Pig Hostel in Amsterdam
The Flying Pig Hostel Uptown and The Flying Pig Hostel Downtown
Connected to the bar is the “happy room” where backpackers can sit back and smoke with friends and other hostel-mates on a pillow stage. There’s no fear for having a bad trip here, as all of your essentials are included; breakfast, bed linen, WIFI, maps, free city tours, lockers, and a central location are all part of the cheap price. Make sure to take advantage of the fully-equipped kitchen with your buddies to cook up a batch of something nice. And if you really want to get baked, take their shuttle bus to Flying Pig Beach to burn in the sun and go for a swim in Noordwijk.
Find yourself a bit dazed and confused, and not sure where the time went? Relax, there’s no rush to leave. Stay for three nights at any Flying Pig Hostel and get one night free.
While Amsterdam may have picked up a bad rep from some that don’t approve of its prostitution and soft drug permissibility, “the city of sin” label should not be taken seriously. Amsterdam is a friendly site for all travelers, whether you’re personally 420-friendly or not doesn’t matter, there’s plenty of history and culture to keep you occupied. Embrace the city with a sense of humor for what it is: a place that isn’t afraid to confront, accept, and celebrate all sorts of people with all sorts of hobbies. Also, be aware of Amsterdam is a shopping haven – you need to take advantage out of this!
