Happy Birthday, M&J Hostel in Rome!

We interviewed Mario Gallo, the owner of M&J Hostel and asked him about his hostel in Rome and this special day for M&J Hostel.

Gomio: Mario, on the 11th of May your Hostel “M&J Hostel” will turn 18 years old. Do you remember the first guest you welcomed to M&J Hostel? What kind of feeling was that?

Mario Gallo: Of course I do remember the first guest here. It seems like it was yesterday that I opened the door for two Australian sisters. So I actually had two first guests. It has been a big adventure from the very beginning.

Gomio
: In most European countries turning 18 means attaining full age. How are you going to celebrate this special day?

Mario Gallo: We will have an Great Italian party for the 18th anniversary, where everyone is invited for free drinks, food and cake to share this special day with us. There will be a DJ playing in the living room cafe all night long, and everyone is more than welcome.

Gomio: All over the time as a hostel in Rome you must have hosted quite a bunch of people. Do you have any idea how many people from different cities and countries have stayed at M&J Hostel?

Mario Gallo: We had many different nations from day one. Some were brighter than the other, stuck in my memory. But it doesn’t really matter. From number one to number 1.000.000, every single one of the hostel guest have made M&J’s history, and I’m really thankful for that. I must say that almost a representative person of all countries have been here.

Gomio: Hostels are about people, and you met a lot of people in your hostel. Do you have any favorite Hostel Story with a crazy, funny hostel guest you would like to share with us?

Mario Gallo: I guess, I will need to write few books to spread all the great and funny, and also sad stories. But there are few worth mention for their faith. A man named Horst Schad, who travelled from Germany to Sydney by bicycle, back in 1998-2000, to bring the Olympic sign of Peace. Or an old lady, she was 88 years old, travelling with her niece, to show her off the Europe. The granny was the leader and the spirit of this travel adventure. I would like to thank everyone from the day one, who helped us to grow and become the hostel we are now.

Gomio: 18 years ago the hostel scene in Rome must have been quite different from nowadays. How would you describe the developments of the Hostel industry in Rome?

Mario Gallo: In 1995 when we first opened the doors, the guests’ intention was to travel for a longer period. So they might where more into sharing info and experience. Today, people are still happy once they arrive to our hostel with already info in their pockets, often taken from their mobile devices. The hostels in Rome were simple and were trying to define a new idea of hostel for the young people. Most of them were only with shared rooms and shared baths. Today most hostels offer a mix of private and dorms mostly with private facilities. If I must say, today the hostels have more quality than 18 years ago. But as all of us know the Show must go on…
