In Spring you have Frühlingsfest instead of Oktoberfest

Munich is the largest city in southern Germany and famous for its annual beer festival, Oktoberfest. If you like this event, you’re going to love the Spring Beer Festival, it’s quieter, with far fewer tourists, so it’s more authentic experience. As a backpacker beer fan you cannot miss the most amazing Spring beer festival ! ! !

Is it a festival of frauleins (German ladies)? Is it a festival for freeing feelings? Is it an infestation of a bug name Frühling?

Well all of the above really. Frühlingsfest is a mini-Oktoberfest – a beer festival to celebrate the onslaught of spring. So yes, the love bug infests Munich (and many other towns in Germany) around April and May each year and as things get amorous amongst the German lads and ladies, feelings must be freed. And what better way to free them than by applying the social lubricant of beer?

Otherwise known as Springfest, this festival happens at the very same Theresenwiese festival grounds as the more well-known Oktoberfest. It is a lighthearted, less touristy, charming little beer festival, which still has the traditional feel of Oktoberfest, the carnival rides, and the oompah loompah bands playing everything from classic folk songs to modern pop crowd-pleasers.

The first keg is tapped at 4pm on the opening day after the Böllerschützen parade. Once that traditional act is done, the revelling (and drinking) commences. If you’re lucky enough to be around on the first Saturday, there is a giant flea market with over 1000 stands selling any and every thing you can think of from 6am in the morning. There is also a big fireworks display on the second Friday and lots of random other events throughout the week. So no matter when you go, you’re sure to have a good time.

If you love beer and the camaraderie it engenders, if you love ferris wheels and carousels with onboard bars serving 1€ beers at happy hour, if you love singing and swaying to tunes atop benches with locals, if you love love, Frühlingsfest is for you.
