Greece, a great country place to visit for the backpacker or budget sensitive traveler. In the past Greece was once very expensive to visit but it is now affordable.
Here, we will focus on some of the wonderful Greek Islands.
In Greece one of the amazing attractions that one can easily find are the Greek Islands. There are from 1,200 to 6,000 islands in total, depending on who you ask and what you classify as an “island”. With populations ranging from over 620,000 to uninhabited. Some islands are so small you can easily get around on foot or bicycle. Since there are obviously so many islands we have chosen some popular ones where you can book hostels from our website to fully enjoy the charm that these isles offer.
Often considered one of the most picturesque islands and cited in magazines and top 10’s throughout the internet this island is well known for the white and blue domed houses that dot the coastline that makes up this island. Santorini as a whole has a large half moon like bay due to a large volcanic eruption that collapsed the center of the island covering the current inhabitants and creating the bay. Take advantage of the death of the inhabitants of the island and visit the archeological ruins. There are volcanic landscapes to explore, architecture to appreciate, and since you’re on an island obviously there are beaches.
On this Isle we reccomend the great hostel Fira Backpackers Place in the town of Fira. Centrally located in the town of Fira you can find anything that you need at this hostel. Book your stay in Santorini here.
The island with the smallest population on this list (around 2000), Ios does not disappoint. Here you can enjoy a much slower paced and less crowded greek island experience. With it comes scenic hilly paths, the archaeological sites like Sarkos or Homer’s tomb, and let’s not forget our friends at the beach!
At Ios we have Francesco’s. A family run Hostel in the city of Chora that has a great view of the beach from its terrace and a rooftop pool. The hostel is there to make life easier for you and they will even pick you up from your ferry if you let them know in advance when you arrive there. Book your hostel in Ios here.
The largest of all the Greek Isles. It is traditionally considered the island where John penned the book of Revelations. This island has the largest population and obviously the largest variation in geological diversity. Here you can see more ruins, hike so many mountainous trails, and visit the beaches. Because this island is so large you can actually fly in on a plane to one of the two international airports.
Stay in bungalows at the Palkias Youth Hostel. Here the staff provides inexpensive service and an awesome out of the way place to stay on Crete. It is located on the southern part of the island therefore making it less busy, you can find information about hikes and hidden natural secrets across the island as well as secluded beaches. Book the best hostels in Crete here.
Paros had once contained a vast amount of archaeological findings but the majority of those were sent to a museum in Athens. You can still find a small portion of the findings at a museum on the island. Water sports like kite and windsurfing are both popular along with visiting the lovely beaches across the entire island. There is also a very popular club and night scene on the island. Here you can stay at Pension Rena, a place that specializes in private rooms and has great touristic advice.
